How to Prepare for GRE Vocabulary Test?

Vocabulary is the basic set of words that are familiar to a person. Vocabulary can be of four types i.e. reading, writing, listening and speaking. Reading vocabulary is the literate person’s vocabulary that he/she can recognize while reading a text. Writing vocabulary is one where the writer uses words that are familiar to him/her while writing any essay or text. Listening vocabulary is the knowledge of a person to recognize words while listening to a speech. Speaking vocabulary is the use of words in one’s speech.

Increasing or improving your vocabulary doesn’t mean just learning new words but to be able to use that word in appropriate context is what we need to work on.

  • Read:

The more you read, the more you will learn new words. The best way to learn new words is to start reading newspaper, novels or magazines. Whenever you come across a new word note it down in a journal and learn the meaning of the word as well so that it becomes easy for you to understand where to use the word and how. This will not just help you to increase your vocabulary but also will increase your reading speed which you need in the exam for comprehension questions.

  • Keep a dictionary:

As you have started reading for a purpose now so always keep a dictionary handy. Whenever you see a new word while reading, check its meaning. The use of thesaurus will also help you improve your vocabulary as here you can see similar words or learn other words that mean the same and then see the opposite words.

  • Learn five words a day:

Make a rule during your preparation that you will learn five new words every day. These five words can be from anywhere or whatever you read. If while reading from the newspaper or magazine you do not come across any new word then open your dictionary and learn new words from there.

  • Word of the day:

While learning new words every day, make a point that you make one word “the word of the day” and try and use that word in different sentences and also in your everyday conversations.

  • Make a journal

It is advisable that you make a journal of new words. Keep noting down the new words you learn with its meaning so that you can go back and revise or refer to it whenever required. You need to keep this journal up to date and handy.

  • Word games

This is way to have fun and learn at the same time. Word games can challenge you and help you discover new words and there meanings. The games you can play can be scrabble, jumbled words, crossword puzzles or word building.

  • Conversations

Having conversations with other people in English can help you improve your knowledge of new words and how these words can be used in context. While having a conversation you get a chance to use the words you have learnt and also help to analyze if you are using it correctly.
